| There are
several large supermarket chains operating in Athens-the
most well known being: Alpha Beta Vassilopoulos,
Sklavenites, Carrefour, Marinopoulos, Metro and
Beropoulos. Prices do vary from supermarket to
supermarket, sometimes by more than 10% for identical
goods, so it is worth keeping an eye on what you are
paying. The big supermarkets stock everything from
groceries, green groceries, meat and fish to hardware,
clothes, luggage and stationery. Carrefour, being a
French chain, sells more French products than elsewhere
and they are one of the most competitive supermarkets.
They also have a wide range of large electrical items on
sale as well as computers. All the large supermarkets
(with the exception of Carrefour) will deliver your
shopping to your home provided that the order is above a
minimum amount (usually around €60.00).
Two discount
supermarket chains; Lidel (German) and Dia/Maxi Dia
(Spanish) operate in Athens and are very cheap.
Lidel sells mainly
German produce and has a good selection of cold meats,
salamis and sausages, all pre-packed. Household
equipment and clothing in some stores. No fresh meat,
bread or milk. Will not accept credit cards. You are
charged for your plastic bags so recycle and take your
own.
Dia/Maxi Dia has
limited stock, own brand products and some of the more
well-known Greek brands. Only pre-packed meats, cheeses
and cold meats Milk and fresh bread sold. Maxi Dia has a
larger selection of goods. |
