Most state museums are closed on Mondays. To our best knowledge, opening times we have given, are correct, but we have included telephone numbers should you wish to double check. Museums are also closed on the following public holidays: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Day, Good Friday, May 1st and 25th March. For other information, call the appropriate museum. Photography (no flash) is generally allowed but there are some exceptions, so ask on entrance as there may be an extra charge or special permission needed.
NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM 210 821 7717 / 7724

Patission 44, Athens: This is one of the world's top ten museums and one of the largest and most important museums of ancient Greek art. There are so many exhibits that one visit is not enough. The most significant exhibits are: The Poseidon of Artemision, The Statuette of Zeus, Demeter and Persephone, Hygeia's Head, The Stele of Hegeso, The Boy of Marathon, The Golden Mask of Agamemnon, the ''Jockey Boy'' of Artemision, and the Thera Exhibition of frescos. Mon. 12.30 - 7pm. Tues - Sun. 8am - 7pm.

GOULANDRIS MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY 210 801 5870
Levidou 13, Kifisia: The museum exhibits rich collections of insects, birds, mammals, reptiles and shells as well as rocks and fossils from all over Greece. A new wing has recently been opened housing hands-on exhibits for children to enjoy.
Open every day except Fri 09.00-14.30 entrance €3 adults €1.20 children/students.

Stadiou 13, Athens: Housed in the old Parliament building, the entrance to this museum is located behind the statue of Kolokotronis (hero of the Greek war of independence), on Stadiou St near Syntagma Square. The exhibits cover all periods of Modern Greek history. Open every day except Mon 09.00-14.00 entrance €3 adults €1.20 children/students.

THE MUSEUM OF CYCLADIC ART 210 722 8321-3
4, Neofytou Douka, Kolonaki. Founded to house the Goulandris family's private collection of Cycladic art. Well organized, on the first floor you will find examples of Cycladic culture, while the second floor houses miniatures and memorabilia from the same period. Open daily 10-4pm Sat 10-3pm Sundays and Tuesday closed Admission €3.50

1-3 Dioghenous St, Plaka. Exhibits photographs of musicians. You can listen to recordings of Cretan lyres, lutes, drums and other instruments. Museum shop has a large variety of CDs and cassettes. Open daily 10-2pm Wed 12-6pm Mon closed Admission Free

Kydathenaeon 17, Plaka: Exhibits in this museum cover the period from 1650 until present day. Exhibits include textiles, embroideries, and costumes, silverware, and folk paintings, works by Theophilos Hatzimichael, a famous modern Greek painter from Lesvos (a whole room is dedicated to his work), woodcarvings, stone carvings and a puppet theatre. Open daily 10-2pm Closed Mon €2.00 adults €1.00 senior citizens Sunday admission free

Vas Sophias 22, Athens: This museum has one of the richest collections of Byzantine icons in the world. The building housing it was once the town residence of the Duchesse de Plaisance. The building facing the entrance houses three different churches of different periods: Early Christian, Byzantine and post-Byzantine. Rizari 2 & Frantzi: Houses weapons from the Stone Age and the classical period to the Second World War. Exhibits include maps, military uniforms, and fighter planes, banners and models of warships and planes.

CHILDREN'S MUSEUM 210 331 2995-6
14 Kydathenaeon, Plaka. Museum dedicated to children, hands-on displays allow children to explore, think, experiment and create. In the attic there is a reconstruction of a room from an old Athenian house complete with antiques, radio and heater. It is called the ''grandmother and grandfather room'' and in it children can dress up in period costume. A replica of a work site from the new metro allows children to venture into a tunnel. The museum also has a library and playground and runs special programmes and events (phone for details as booking may be necessary).

LALAOUNIS JEWELLERY MUSEUM

Private collection consisting of over 3,000 pieces of jewelery. In the museum visitors can watch jewelers working. Open Mon/Thur/Sat 9-4pm Wed 9-9pm Sun 11-4pm €3 adults €2.30 Senior Citizens Admission free for children under 10 and every Wednesday from 3-9pm

Akadamias 50, Athens: Housed on the ground floor of the Municipal Cultural Centre of Athens. Exhibits include photographs, playbills, costumes and personal items donated by Greek actors and settings and masks used in modern staging of ancient dramas.
