state museums are closed on Mondays. To our best knowledge,
opening times we have given, are correct, but we have
included telephone numbers should you wish to double check.
Museums are also closed on the following public holidays:
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Day, Good Friday,
May 1st and 25th March. For other information, call the
appropriate museum. Photography (no flash) is generally
allowed but there are some exceptions, so ask on entrance as
there may be an extra charge or special permission needed. |

This is one of the world's top ten museums and one of the
largest and most important museums of ancient Greek art.
There are so many exhibits that one visit is not enough.
The most significant exhibits are: The Poseidon of
Artemision,
The Statuette of Zeus, Demeter and Persephone, Hygeia's
Head, The Stele of Hegeso, The Boy of Marathon, The Golden
Mask of Agamemnon, the ''Jockey Boy'' of Artemision, and
the Thera Exhibition of frescos.

The museum exhibits rich collections of insects, birds, mammals,
reptiles and shells as well as rocks and fossils from all
over Greece. A new wing has recently been opened housing hands-on
exhibits for children to enjoy.

Exhibits in this museum cover the period from 1650 until present
day. Exhibits include textiles, embroideries, and costumes,
silverware, and folk paintings, works by Theophilos
Hatzimichael,
a famous modern Greek painter from Lesvos (a whole room is
dedicated to his work), woodcarvings, stone carvings and a

This museum has one of the richest collections of Byzantine
icons in the world. The building housing it was once the town
residence of the Duchesse de Plaisance. The building facing
the entrance houses three different churches of different
periods: Early Christian, Byzantine and post-Byzantine. Open

Kydathenaeon, Plaka.
Museum dedicated to children, hands-on displays allow children
to explore, think, experiment and create. In the attic there
is a reconstruction of a room from an old Athenian house complete
with antiques, radio and heater. It is called the ''grandmother
and grandfather room'' and in it children can dress up in
period costume. A replica of a work site from the new metro
allows children to venture into a tunnel. The museum also
has a library and playground and runs special programmes and
events (phone for details as booking may be necessary).
