ACROPOLIS:
Nearest metro station ACROPOLIS
No one lives in Athens and fails to visit the Acropolis
and the Acropolis museum. Guides are available for a fee
(English, French, German, Italian & Spanish) but a
good guidebook will do. Very unsuitable for pushchairs
and small children. It is advisable to wear good
gripping shoes; it is quite a climb and the marble has
worn very smooth and can be treacherous when wet!
Remember to take water if visiting in the summer, as it
is very exposed.
Open
daily 8am – 3pm The new Acropolis ticket , priced 12
Euro for adults, enables you also to visit the Theatre
of Dionysos, Keramikos, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Ancient
Agora and Roman Agora within a week of purchase.

| SYNTAGMA
SQUARE/HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT: Nearest Metro
station Syntagma. The Greek parliament building stands
opposite Syntagma square and below the main facade you
will find the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. You can
witness the changing of the Tsolias guards at 11am every
day. Children can feed the pigeons (food on sale) and
have their photographs taken. |
| ZAPPION
ROYAL GARDENS: Nearest metro Syntagma. Walk
past the parliament buildings and you will come to the
gardens on your left. In these large and well-kept
gardens (an oasis in the centre of Athens) you can find
many varieties of trees and plants. There is a
playground and a small zoo. When walking in these
gardens you forget you are in the centre of a busy city,
children can feed the ducks and look out for one of the
many tortoises. You can walk through the gardens from
Syntagma Square to the original Olympic stadium on Vas
Constantinou. |
| LYCAVITTOS
HILL AND THE CHURCH OF ST GEORGE: Beautiful
views of Athens from the top where you will find a small
cafe, well worth a visit. There is only one road leading
to the top, but many footpaths; it is a steep walk. You
can also go up on the funicular railway, (type of cable
car that runs up through the mountain) which starts from
the corner of Aristipou & Ploutarchou St and
operates daily, one car up/down approx. every 30
minutes. |
| PLAKA:
The Flea market : Athens oldest and most picturesque
neighbourhood. When you walk around Plaka it is
advisable to have a map with you, as it is easy to get
lost in the labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.
There are an abundance of souvenir, fur and leather
goods as well as jewellery shops to be found in Plaka.
Be prepared to bargain for a better price for your
goods. Plaka's main square, Philomosou, is full of cafes
restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Food is good and
reasonably priced. The area gets very crowded on a
Sunday. |
