Athens is
a city that comes to life at night. Nightlife in Athens
tends to start late as most nightclubs don't open until
after 23.00. The busiest nights are at the weekend. In
the summer nightlife tends to move towards outdoor
venues with city clubs closing during the hotter months.
There are many good clubs however, located in the
coastal areas that remain open, offering both indoor and
outdoor entertainment. Some offer only drinks and others
are combined with restaurant facilities. The Athens
Festival is held in the summer, mainly catering to the
classical enthusiast, but rock and jazz musicians also
perform so most music tastes are covered. Many famous
musicians have performed in Athens at either the
historic Odeon of Herod Atticus or the Lycabettus
Amphitheatre on Lycabettus Hill. The winter season sees
a strong club scene opening with music to suit all kinds
of tastes available: ethnic, Greek bouzouki, jazz,
blues, mainstream, rock, folk rembetica & techno.
Clubs are widespread throughout the suburbs, but the
city centre venues are still the most ''in'', including
Psyrri, which is becoming very popular and is located
close to the city's market and wholesale trading areas.
Good places to look for further entertainment listings
are the Greek language Athinorama (sold at kiosks) &
The Athens News (weekly English newspaper).
Many clubs
are seasonal and at some booking tables, even for drinks
only, may be required so it's best to phone first. |
