| Greece
is the home of modern medicine and the majority of
medical terms are derived from ancient or modern Greek.
Every type of medical service can be found in Athens and
is generally of high quality. Below we have listed some
doctors, dentists and others that have been personally
recommended to us by fellow expatriates. If you would
like to add to this list please send your addition to us
by email.
Private hospitals in
Greece are good but Greek State hospitals leave a lot to
be desired especially outside the Athens area. Nurses
are not as highly trained as those overseas and
hospitals are generally understaffed. If you are in a
Greek State hospital you may require a relative or
private nurse to remain with you as ward nurses have
little or no time to run after you.
It is not uncommon for
a drip to run out and there be no one there to replace
it for you. However, the doctors are well trained and
knowledgeable. Most speak English or another language.
Residents of EU countries are eligible to receive free
emergency care but if you visit a private doctor you can
expect to pay between €50 and €120 per visit
depending on the doctor's field.
If you need
pathological tests, blood work or X-rays, there is an
abundance of private laboratories in Athens. Service is
usually quick and your results will be available within
a short space of time. Medical insurance is always
advisable as the costs of hospital stays, tests,
operations etc, can be costly. We can help with finding
private health care insurance if required. It is also
worth noting that most towns have a 24hr emergency
clinic. |
