A varied range of international educational institutions operates in the Athens area from kindergarten up to university level. English is the most common language but there are also other European schools such as French, German, & Italian as well as other foreign languages such as Japanese, Arabic & Philippine. All schools offer wide curricula, Greek as a foreign language and usually one other foreign language. The majority of schools have now introduced the International
Baccalaureate program as a school leaving diploma and have expanded and upgraded their facilities in accordance with this.

In addition to ' international ' schools, there are a number of private Greek schools that offer the IB program and that have excellent teaching facilities. Greek is the primary teaching language in these schools up to Grade 10 but the IB program is taught in English. These schools cater particularly for children of Greek origin returning to Greece from overseas and in the case of Geitonas in Vari have developed a special program (estia) aimed at assisting these children in adapting to the Greek language.

Small English, French & Italian nursery/kindergarten schools operate both in the northern and southern suburbs of Athens and most of the major international schools have nursery/kindergarten programs.

There are a large number of summer programs on offer in Athens offering various sports and arts & crafts. These programs usually run throughout June and July as the Greek school year runs from early September to mid June.
